It retains a high degree of its historic architectural character, enhanced by a porch reconstructed from historic photographs. It has also served as a major community institution since 1903.","narrative":"Standing on the north side of East Main Street in the center of Morrisville, this two-and-one-half-story frame cottage was built around 1850 for Lyman Kingman, a local merchant and druggist. It has a narrow side-gable form with a centered cross gable, bracketed eaves, mustard-colored clapboard siding and Gothic Revival details such as an ogee-arched door panel and a sunburst in the gable. A full-width porch, rebuilt in 1988 from historic photographs, replaced a non-historic vestibule. Henry and Mary Austin Phelps lived in the house for about half a century. After Mary Phelps died in 1903, their daughter Susanna Phelps Gage, a biologist, donated the home to the village for a library, and residents voted to accept it. The building has served as the public library ever since, and it remains a center of community activity. It is valued as a well-preserved example of the frame Gothic cottage type popular in the mid-1800s.","period_of_significance":"c1850-1954","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century / Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"In use as the village public library, occupying most of the first floor, with offices and a history room on the second floor.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.881907-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05001126.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001126/30bf426c1f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001126/30bf426c1f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morrisville_Public_Library_Jul_11.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morrisville_Public_Library_Jul_11.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318724","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morrisville_Public_Library","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6914145"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/madison-county/morrisville-public-library-05001126/"}
