Johnson and enlarged around 1905. The 2.26-acre lot also holds a storage building and a carriage house.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is one of the finest and most intact examples of Queen Anne architecture in southern Wake County. Its elaborate sawnwork porch, with pendants unlike any other porch detail in the county, is its most distinctive feature. The c. 1905 enlargement kept the Queen Anne character and made the house more high-style. It also retains a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Set well back from Johnson Pond Road near Fuquay-Varina, this Queen Anne-style house was built around 1896 by lumberman and businessman Kemp B. Johnson for his new bride, using sawnwork from his own lumberyard. It began as a one-story house with a high hipped roof and twin front gables. Around 1905 Johnson raised part of it to one and a half stories and added a large dormer over the stair hall and a rear balcony to make room for his growing family. The front porch, with turned posts, balustrade, brackets and pendant-trimmed cornice, is the most striking feature and has no match elsewhere in Wake County. Inside, the center-hall plan survives with beadboard ceilings, mantels and fluted trim. A brick storage building and a frame carriage house also contribute to the property. It was recognized for architecture as one of the finest Queen Anne houses in southern Wake County, retaining a high degree of integrity despite modest later changes.","period_of_significance":"circa 1896, circa 1905","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling with secondary structures; the interior was extensively and sensitively renovated in the late twentieth century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.689661-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/83/7224/47722483/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/05001028.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001028/c27d9c85af-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001028/c27d9c85af-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Fvman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fuquay-Varina-Kemp-B-Johnson-House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Fvman</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fuquay-Varina-Kemp-B-Johnson-House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722483","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kemp_B._Johnson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20065306"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/johnson-kemp-b-house-05001028/"}
