It was part of a suburban electric railway built to develop the Bronx and Westchester, and later joined the city subway system. It keeps a relatively high degree of integrity and is significant at the local level.","narrative":"Morris Park Station is a subway station on the Dyre Avenue Line (5 train) in the Bronx. Its Spanish Colonial Revival control house was built in 1912 for the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway, a suburban electric line. The city acquired the line between 1940 and 1941 and linked it directly to the IRT system in 1957. The single-story reinforced concrete headhouse has a hipped roof with simulated terra cotta tiles, arched windows with keystones and scrolled brackets, and medallions bearing a caduceus and a ram's head. Inside, a vaulted lobby has a mosaic tile band and a terrazzo floor. The platforms run partly through the Esplanade Tunnel, partly in an open cut, and partly elevated. The station was co-designed by Reed & Stem and Fellheimer & Long. It was listed for its role in suburban development of the Bronx and Westchester, and for its engineering and architecture. Despite replaced windows and rebuilt platforms, it retains much of its original character.","period_of_significance":"1912-1941","architect_builder":"Reed & Stem; Fellheimer & Long","architectural_style":"Late 19th & 20th Century Revivals/Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Operating as a station on the IRT Dyre Avenue Line; the platforms were rebuilt in the 1990s and the window replacements and marquee removal are noted as minor changes.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.459725-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000677.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000677/f8c7fe42f9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000677/f8c7fe42f9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morris_Park_Station.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.5</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morris_Park_Station.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312126","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_Park_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2565684"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/the-bronx/morris-park-station-05000677/"}
