The nominated parcel also includes a small privy.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a substantially intact, representative example of rural school architecture in Schoharie County, with a plain vernacular Greek Revival design and timber frame construction. It is one of few such simple rural schools to survive in the region, and it reflects the evolution of rural education until it closed around 1935.","narrative":"Located at the corner of Lumber Road and South Gilboa Road in South Gilboa, this one-room schoolhouse was built in 1849 as one of the town of Gilboa's 17 original district schools. It is a rectangular, gable-roofed timber-frame building with clapboard siding, molded corner pilasters, a simple cornice and pediment, and a fieldstone foundation. The west end was later extended, and banks of 2/2 windows were added in the early twentieth century. Inside, a vestibule leads to a single large classroom with beadboard walls, wainscoting, blackboards and period desks and benches. The school served a widely dispersed farming population, in an area shaped by tanning, railroads and dairy farming. It later became part of the Gilboa-Conesville Central School District and closed around 1935. It was listed for its education history and as a rare surviving, plain Greek Revival rural school. Today the town of Gilboa maintains it as a local history museum and meeting hall.","period_of_significance":"1849-circa 1935","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Owned and maintained by the town of Gilboa; currently houses a local history collection and serves as a community meeting hall.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.850274-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000665.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321737","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forks_in_the_Road_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5469832"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schoharie-county/forks-in-the-road-schoolhouse-05000665/"}
