It is one of the oldest remaining schoolhouses in the county and unusual for its marble construction. Only one other stone one-room schoolhouse, in Bedford, is cited in the county.","narrative":"Built in 1835 of roughly cut Tuckahoe marble, this one-room schoolhouse at 388 California Road in Eastchester, New York, is among the oldest surviving schoolhouses in Westchester County. It originally stood about 3,000 feet southwest, in what is now Mount Vernon, and was moved to its present site in 1869. It served children from southern Eastchester and northern Mount Vernon until it closed in 1884. The Kloepfer estate left it to the Town of Eastchester in 1952, and the Eastchester Historical Society later restored it after years of neglect. The building is a single story with a gabled wood-shingle roof, a small belfry, a bracketed cornice added later in the 19th century, and six-over-six windows. Its form is vernacular, with a vague Greek Revival character and later Victorian elements. It is significant for architecture, as a rare marble example of early educational building, and for its place in the county's educational history. Today it is furnished as a 19th-century classroom.","period_of_significance":"1835 - 1884","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century: Greek Revival (vernacular, with later Victorian elements)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Restored by the Eastchester Historical Society and now used as a museum, furnished with 19th-century school furniture and used to educate the public.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.677495-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000663.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000663/335be63b51-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000663/335be63b51-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Anthony22 (talk) (Uploads)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Marble_schoolhouse_800.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Anthony22 (talk) (Uploads)</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Marble_schoolhouse_800.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323099","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marble_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6755220"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/marble-schoolhouse-05000663/"}
