It is also significant for the Sawyer family's role in the settlement and development of the town, with continuous family occupation since the eighteenth century.","narrative":"Set on a rise above Maple Avenue in the Town of Goshen, this farmhouse grew in stages over roughly 110 years. Its earliest section, a story-and-a-half side-passage house, was probably built about 1780 by Captain James Sawyer after he acquired the land in 1778. The house was extended by two bays around 1810 to form a symmetrical five-bay plan, retaining a Federal-style mantel, five-panel doors and a built-in cabinet. About 1860 the upper floor was raised and Picturesque details were added, including double-leaf entrance doors and round-arched gable windows. A one-story rear addition followed around 1890, along with a large dairy barn and silo. The property is recognized for its layered architecture and for the Sawyer family, whose descendants have occupied the parcel for eight generations. The listed parcel covers 1.9 acres, with a garage and swimming pool counted as noncontributing.","period_of_significance":"c. 1780-c. 1890","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal; Mid-19th Century: Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; descendants of the original Sawyer settlers continue to live in it.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.79211-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000636.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000636/38951dcba9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000636/38951dcba9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sawyer_Farmhouse,_Goshen,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sawyer_Farmhouse,_Goshen,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320734","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sawyer_Farmhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7428735"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/sawyer-farmhouse-05000636/"}
