It includes the church and attached rectory (1923), a school (1914) and a non-contributing convent (1959).","why_significant":"The church is argued to be an intact, representative example of Late Gothic Revival church design by the prominent New York firm of Helmle and Corbett (Criterion C, architecture). Its English Gothic-inspired design, quality materials and craftsmanship, stained glass and Skinner organ add to its value. The parish is also described as historically significant for its association with the social history of the local community.","narrative":"Holy Innocents is a Roman Catholic church complex in Brooklyn's Flatbush neighborhood, at 279 East 17th Street, near the Prospect Park South and Ditmas Park historic districts. The stone church and attached rectory, both finished in 1923, were designed by Helmle and Corbett in the Late Gothic Revival style. Granite walls with limestone trim, pointed-arch windows with stained glass tracery, a battlemented bell tower and a lofty nave with exposed wooden trusses define the building. The interior includes three marble memorial altars, windows by John Morgan and Son, and an E.M. Skinner pipe organ that remains largely original. Across the street stands the 1914 parish school, with Italian Renaissance details, built under the Sisters of Mercy. A 1959 convent is not counted as historic because of its age. The parish began in 1909 as Flatbush grew, and a 1921 fundraising drive raised $160,000 for the new church. It remains an active congregation with a diverse membership.","period_of_significance":"1914-1923","architect_builder":"Helmle and Corbett","architectural_style":"Late 19th & 20th Century Revivals/Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still an active parish; the school remains in use, the convent building is occupied by the Angel Guardian Home, and the Skinner organ was undergoing restoration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.166766-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000617.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000617/2ab36a8e2a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000617/2ab36a8e2a-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Holy_Innocents_RCC_Bk_jeh.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Holy_Innocents_RCC_Bk_jeh.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318345","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_Holy_Innocents_(Brooklyn)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5117909"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/brooklyn/church-of-the-holy-innocents-05000617/"}
