It displays complex massing and a wealth of decorative detail made by local craftsmen. It also reflects the prosperity of the city's glove and leather industry.","narrative":"Built in 1892 at 23 Prospect Avenue in Gloversville, this large frame house was the residence of Gustav Levor, one of the city's most prosperous tanners. Levor specialized in shoe leather, was first to develop a method for producing washable suede, and helped found the City National Bank in 1888. The house is a 2 1/2-story Queen Anne design on a cut stone foundation, with clapboard siding, an engaged round corner tower with a conical roof, varied dormers, tall corbelled chimneys and a raised wraparound porch with turned columns. Inside, the center hall has varnished hardwood paneling, an ornate staircase and a fireplace inglenook, and the formal rooms keep parquet floors, molded plaster and original brass hardware. Local craftsmen produced the turnings, moldings and paneling. Its design, craftsmanship and exceptional integrity make it among the best preserved examples of its type in the community, and it recalls the glove and leather industry that shaped Gloversville.","period_of_significance":"1892","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic use was a single dwelling; current use is a multiple dwelling.
