It was built in two sections, about 1818 and about 1822, for Sterling Neblett Jr., and sits on 25 acres with period outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues Brickland is significant under Criterion C for architecture at the local level. It is one of only a few brick Federal dwellings in Lunenburg County. Its plasterwork, woodwork and stair are among the most sophisticated in the county and reflect architectural pattern books. Its collection of outbuildings adds to its architectural value.","narrative":"Brickland is a brick Federal-style plantation house near Kenbridge in Lunenburg County, Virginia. Sterling Neblett Jr. built it in two sections, the first about 1818 and the second about 1822, on land he received from his father in 1816. The plantation grew from 280 acres to 1,600 acres under his management. The house has two entrances with double-leaf paneled doors and Adamesque fanlights, and the later section has a gabled porch with paired Tuscan columns. Inside are detailed plaster, mantels, wainscoting and a three-story circular stair. The house was updated about 1920 with a kitchen, electricity and plumbing. Behind it stand brick and frame outbuildings, including a pump house, smokehouse, summer kitchen, barns and what the form calls the county's first post office. The house is one of only a few brick dwellings in the county and is regarded as an exceptional example of regional Federal craftsmanship.","period_of_significance":"1818 - ca. 1920","architect_builder":"Unknown (the form suggests builders Dabney Cosby and/or William A. Howard may have been involved)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The form says the house and its systems have been completely restored and the house is in excellent condition. Current function is single dwelling, with agricultural resources listed as not in use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.741086-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/6817/41681717/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/05000524.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000524/95b5e7d647-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000524/95b5e7d647-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brickland_driveway_view.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brickland_driveway_view.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681717","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brickland","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712071"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/lunenburg-county/brickland-05000524/"}
