It centers on a Colonial Revival brick main building erected in 1926-27, with a 1935 frame Home Economics cottage.","why_significant":"The school is argued to be significant under Criterion A for Education and Social History because it was central to Spencer community life through most of the twentieth century. It is significant under Criterion C for the quality of its design and construction, and as an example of 1920s Virginia Board of Education standard school designs. It and its ancillary buildings are the only surviving pre-World War II non-domestic structures in Spencer.","narrative":"Spencer-Penn School is a former rural school in the community of Spencer, in southwestern Henry County, Virginia. Its main building, a Colonial Revival structure of dark red brick, was built in 1926-27 with help from a large donation by the Penn family. The school grew from a three-room frame schoolhouse of 1910 on land given by Mary Spencer Buchanan. A small frame Home Economics cottage was added in 1935, and brick wings followed in 1948 and 1961, with a gymnasium in 1965. The design reflects the standard plans the Virginia State Board of Education promoted in the 1920s for consolidated schools. Beyond classes, the grounds hosted ball games, pageants, and the Spencer Fair, first held in 1940. Community members cleared the ball field and dug the basement. The county closed the school in 2002, and the buildings now stand vacant. The property is recognized for its role in local education and social life and for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1926-1955","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant and not in use; the Henry County School Board abandoned the property in 2002 after consolidating its schools.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.488944-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/89/6812/41681289/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/05000482.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000482/16dbb107d4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000482/16dbb107d4-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Spencer-Penn_School_from_east.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Spencer-Penn_School_from_east.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681289","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spencer%E2%80%93Penn_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713231"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/henry-county/spencer-penn-school-05000482/"}
