The parsonage was built in 1843, the church in 1847, and the church was enlarged in 1873.","why_significant":"The nomination argues significance in architecture and social history. The church is a gable-front meeting house with late-Victorian details, and the parsonage is a Greek Revival building that remains largely as built. The congregation has been the only house of worship in the hamlet and a social center for over 150 years. Lemuel Haynes, a Black minister, poet, abolitionist and Revolutionary War soldier, served as its pastor from 1822 to 1833.","narrative":"Three miles south of Granville village, near the Vermont border, a Congregational church and parsonage stand beside a landscaped green off Route 149. The parsonage was built in 1843 in the Greek Revival style at a cost of $615. The one-story frame church dates from 1847 and was enlarged in 1873 at a cost of $3,700. That work added round-arched windows, a mansard-roofed belfry, scrollwork and a slate roof, over a gable-front meeting house form. Inside, oak pews and moldings, stippled and colored glass windows and antique chandeliers survive, and the room is noted for its acoustics. The congregation dates to 1789 or 1790, and this is its fourth building. From 1822 to 1833 its pastor was Lemuel Haynes, a Black minister, poet, abolitionist and Revolutionary War soldier. For more than 150 years the church and parsonage have been a place of worship and a center of social life in the hamlet, hosting suppers, socials and community concerts.","period_of_significance":"1843-1954","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian (church); Greek Revival (parsonage)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The church and parsonage are still used for religion.
