The builder is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an excellent, intact example of a once-common but now rare rural country store, among the oldest surviving in Georgia. It is significant in commerce for serving the Dawnville farming economy, and in social history as a post office and community gathering place. It is also significant in architecture for its simple, typical one-room form.","narrative":"Built around 1878, this one-story, wood-framed country store sits beside State Route 286 in the Dawnville area, roughly eight miles northeast of Dalton, Georgia. It has weatherboard siding, a tin roof, gable returns, a full-width shed porch and a single open room inside with a wood- and coal-burning stove. The store served farmers who bought supplies on credit against their crops, and for a time it housed the community post office, with the storekeeper acting as postmaster. A. D. Strickland ran it in the early twentieth century, adding gasoline and kerosene pumps and tire repair equipment that remain attached to the building. It was long the only general store in the district. Of more than 65,000 resources in the Georgia survey, only 221 were rural buildings originally used as stores, and just 38 still operate as stores. The store stopped operating as a general store by 1970. It was listed for its commercial and social role and its simple, intact form.","period_of_significance":"c.1878-1955","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The store is no longer operated as a general store; it closed by 1970, and the form lists its current function as other. The interior retains a stove, shelving and an attic.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.240331-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/05000405.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000405/0e5561307b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000405/0e5561307b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JDR4ever","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A._D._Strickland_Store.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">JDR4ever</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A._D._Strickland_Store.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209929","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._D._Strickland_Store","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q106887160"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/whitfield-county/strickland-a-d-store-05000405/"}
