The school began in 1858 as a private school taught in settlers' homes, mostly in German. In the late 1860s it educated children of freed slaves alongside other children, an early example of integration. Later schoolhouses were built in 1869, 1889, 1897 and 1931, the last funded largely from the school treasury with labor donated by local families. The school also hosted community clubs and gatherings. It closed in 1951, when parents voted to consolidate with the Fredericksburg school district.
