Under Criterion C it is a good local example of a Colonial Revival building with a symmetrical plan and sandstone craftsmanship. The grounds also served as a social center for the community.","narrative":"Willow City School is a rural school complex at the center of Willow City, a small town about twelve miles northeast of Fredericksburg in Gillespie County, Texas. The five-acre site holds a 32-by-60-foot, two-story sandstone schoolhouse built in 1905, along with a barbecue pit shelter, a well, a 1950 bus barn and two privies. The schoolhouse is Colonial Revival in style, with a symmetrical plan, double-hung windows, granite lintels, a tin roof and the original school bell above the front porch. Inside are two downstairs classrooms and an upstairs room with a stage used for assemblies and social gatherings. A hollow tile restroom addition dates from the early 1950s. The school closed in 1961 when it consolidated with Fredericksburg, and the buildings have changed little since. The property was listed for its role in local education from 1905 to 1955 and for its architecture. It now serves as a community clubhouse, continuing its long use as a gathering place.","period_of_significance":"1905-1955","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals/Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a community clubhouse; the property is virtually unchanged since the school was consolidated with Fredericksburg in 1961.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:24.059506-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/14/9721/40972114/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/05000385.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000385/017946ea21-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000385/017946ea21-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WillowCreek1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WillowCreek1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972114","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willow_City_School_(Gillespie_County,_Texas)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8022277"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/gillespie-county/willow-city-school-05000385/"}
