It is one of three of eight extant Disciples of Christ churches built in Martin County in this period that retain enough architectural integrity, and the only frame Gothic Revival one.","narrative":"Oak City Christian Church is a small frame church on West Commerce Street in Oak City, Martin County, North Carolina. Built in 1921 for a Disciples of Christ congregation organized two years earlier, it has weatherboard walls, a broad front-gable wing with five lancet-arched stained-glass windows, and a two-story bell tower with a hexagonal roof. Inside, the sanctuary keeps its plaster walls, beadboard wainscoting, coffered beadboard ceiling and an Akron plan. Bricks were donated and lumber furnished by local supporters, and later additions include a 1952 rear classroom wing and a separate 1957 education building. The church is valued for its architecture. Of eight surviving Disciples of Christ churches built in the county in the early twentieth century, only three keep enough original character, and this is the only frame Gothic Revival example. Its restrained design shows how national styles reached modest small-town congregations.","period_of_significance":"1921","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century: Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; a 1957 brick education building behind the church is noncontributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.097633-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/7211/47721191/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/05000354.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721191","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak_City_Christian_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7073437"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/martin-county/oak-city-christian-church-05000354/"}
