The property also includes a 1956 education building and a small historic cemetery.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is significant under Criterion C as a representative example of an early-twentieth-century Romanesque Revival church. It reflects the influence of popular national architectural styles on North Carolina churches in the early 1900s. It is one of three of eight surviving Disciples of Christ churches in Martin County from this period that retain enough integrity for listing.","narrative":"On South Main Street in Robersonville, First Christian Church is a one-story brick building in the Romanesque Revival style, completed for a Disciples of Christ congregation organized in 1876. The cross-gable facade features two sets of three arched stained-glass windows with corbelled blonde-brick hoods, a slate hip roof and a two-story corner bell tower with a crenellated parapet. Inside, the church keeps its original Akron plan, with plaster walls, grained woodwork and a sanctuary lit by stained glass. Bricks for the building were first delivered in July 1913, and the church was dedicated in October 1914 at a cost of about $10,000. It replaced the congregation's 1877 frame church. A 1956 education building and a small pioneer cemetery stand behind it. The church was listed for its architecture, as one of only three early-twentieth-century Disciples of Christ churches in Martin County that remain architecturally intact.","period_of_significance":"1913","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Romanesque Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a religious facility, with a cemetery on the grounds.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.314775-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/7211/47721199/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/05000353.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721199","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Christian_Church_(Robersonville,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5452643"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/martin-county/first-christian-church-05000353/"}
