It is also significant under Criterion C as the only surviving prizery in the area, with decorative industrial brickwork typical of the early twentieth century.","narrative":"Built around 1901 by the American Tobacco Company, this two-story brick building on North Herritage Street in Kinston served as a prizery, where cured tobacco leaf was packed into large wooden hogsheads for shipment. It grew in five phases through 1949, adding ells, a cooper shop, a coal room and receiving rooms, and eventually covered almost an acre. Heavy timber posts and load-bearing masonry walls support the structure, while stepped parapets, corbelled cornices, a water table and segmental arches decorate the exterior. Original metal sash windows survive. Ownership passed to British American Tobacco in 1911 and to Export Leaf Tobacco Company in 1912, and a shirt company later used it as a warehouse. Kinston was once a leading bright-leaf tobacco market, and the prizery is the last of six built there in the early 1900s. Its integrity and its record of the tobacco industry's growth support its listing for industry and architecture.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1901-1955","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: Heavy Timber Mill Construction","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacated in 1998, purchased in 2003, and being rehabilitated for adaptive reuse as apartments at the time of the nomination.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.417605-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/58/7210/47721058/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/05000350.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000350/5b2cf4bc8d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000350/5b2cf4bc8d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tradewinds","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:American_Tobacco_Company_Prizery.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Tradewinds</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:American_Tobacco_Company_Prizery.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"89001764","name":"Hill-Grainger Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/hill-grainger-historic-district-89001764/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721058","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Tobacco_Company_Prizery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19460197"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/lenoir-county/american-tobacco-company-prizery-05000350/"}
