It was built in 1889 by Romey & Lewis.","why_significant":"The schoolhouse is significant under Criteria A and C for its role in educating children of District No. 3 in Riley Township from 1889 to 1927. It displays the typical traits of a nineteenth-century one-room school and reflects local community support for rural school building.","narrative":"Built in 1889 on land the Bridenbaugh family sold to the township school board in 1873, this one-room brick schoolhouse in Riley Township, Putnam County, replaced a wood frame school from 1878. It measures 42 by 30 feet, rests on a stone foundation, and has a gable roof, four segmental-arched windows on each side, a front porch and a bell tower. A sandstone plaque names Romey & Lewis as builders. The school served District No. 3 until it closed in 1927, when a Bridenbaugh family member bought it back and used it for farm storage. A descendant later restored it, rebuilding the porch and bell tower from old photographs and refilling the room with 35 desks, a teacher's platform, a stove and a pump organ. It reopened in 1997 and now hosts field trips, reunions and meetings. It is notable as a well-preserved example of the rural one-room schools once common across Putnam County.","period_of_significance":"1889 - 1927","architect_builder":"Romey & Lewis","architectural_style":"No Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Restored (1995-1997 per the description) and now used as a museum, open to the public by appointment.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:06.744962-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/05000343.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000343/b66cf8cdff-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000343/b66cf8cdff-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bridenbaugh_District_No._3_Schoolhouse,_southern_side.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bridenbaugh_District_No._3_Schoolhouse,_southern_side.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991080","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138657194"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/putnam-county/bridenbaugh-district-no-3-schoolhouse-05000343/"}
