Bernhard on a 0.36-acre lot in the village's earliest plat.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C as one of the few and most complete remaining examples of Late Victorian Queen Anne-Eastlake architecture in Jefferson County. It also reflects the local lumber industry, since the Bernhard family owned the Bernhard and Tweedy Lumber Company and all its wood was milled in Adena by that firm. It keeps nearly all of its original architectural details.","narrative":"Built in 1893 on East Main Street in Adena, Ohio, this two-story wood-frame house is a well-preserved example of Queen Anne style with Eastlake influences. Ann E. Bernhard, whose family owned the Bernhard and Tweedy Lumber Company, had it built as a house in town. All of the lumber, including the interior oak woodwork, was cut and milled locally by the family firm. Exterior features include a two-story bay, wraparound porch, side balcony, scalloped shingles in the gables, scroll-sawn trim and leaded and stained glass windows. Inside, an oak staircase, pocket doors, original hardware and fireplaces survive. Later uses included a hotel and the home and office of physician Ellis D. Kackley, who bought it in 1925. A small former newspaper building was moved to the rear in 1934 to serve as a kitchen. The house was recognized for its architecture, as one of the most complete Queen Anne-Eastlake homes remaining in Jefferson County.","period_of_significance":"1893","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Queen Anne-Eastlake","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The description says it was built as a single-family dwelling and is used as one today, but also says the house had stood empty for many years and is in general disrepair, leaving its historic elements untouched.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.054244-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/05000342.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000342/0b25eea132-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000342/0b25eea132-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Roseohioresident","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ann_E._Lewis_Bernhard_House_2012-07-13.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Roseohioresident</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ann_E._Lewis_Bernhard_House_2012-07-13.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989468","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138377430"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/jefferson-county/bernhard-ann-e-lewis-house-05000342/"}
