It is significant under Criterion C as a highly intact example of New England Colonial residential architecture, with rooms grouped around a large central fireplace.","narrative":"Built around 1750 by Samuel Landon, this L-shaped, one and one-half story house on Main Road in Southold is an example of New England Colonial building on eastern Long Island. It has a central fireplace, shingled walls and roof, a five-bay front with an entablature-style door surround, and a kitchen wing added about 1860. The site was granted in the seventeenth century to shipwright Thomas Moore, whose original house disappeared, possibly by fire, which is why the building is also known by his name. Later owners included a blacksmith and War of 1812 officer, members of the Corwin family, and a local postmaster. It served briefly as a caretaker's house in the late 1930s. The Southold Historical Society bought it in 1970, removed later additions such as a dormer and Greek Revival entrance, and now uses it as a museum with exhibits and school programs. It was listed for its role in Southold's settlement and for its intact colonial architecture.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1750-1954","architect_builder":"Samuel Landon","architectural_style":"New England Colonial","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Operated as a historic house museum by the Southold Historical Society, part of a 2.9 acre outdoor museum complex; restored to its eighteenth century appearance.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.834713-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000329.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000329/03ff6deca2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000329/03ff6deca2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Americasroof","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel-landon.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Americasroof</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel-landon.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322160","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Landon_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7411968"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/landon-samuel-house-05000329/"}
