It is the county's only surviving one-room schoolhouse and its earliest surviving frame school. It served as a school from about 1890 until 1922, when it consolidated with a school in Ellerbe.","narrative":"Bostick School is a one-room frame schoolhouse built around 1890 in rural Richmond County, about three miles northwest of Ellerbe. It is a gable-front building of roughly twenty by thirty-six feet, set on a fieldstone foundation and clad in plain weatherboards, with a shed-roofed porch over the front door. Inside, tongue-and-groove walls, pine floors, a coal stove and early twentieth-century desks remain. A school had served the Bostick district since at least the 1840s, and this building replaced earlier schools there. It operated until 1922, when it consolidated with a school in Ellerbe, and was later used as a peach packhouse, tobacco barn and tool shed. The Richmond County Historical Society restored it from 1992 to 1998, removing later additions and installing a cedar shingle roof. It is the county's only remaining one-room schoolhouse and its earliest surviving frame school, which is the basis for its listing for education history.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1890-1922","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Restored between 1992 and 1998 by the Richmond County Historical Society and now used as a museum, opened for school groups who re-enact a nineteenth-century school day.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.670988-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/7219/47721928/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/05000327.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000327/97145f3869-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000327/97145f3869-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BOSTICK_SCHOOL;_RICHMOND_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721928","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bostick_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19868166"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/richmond-county/bostick-school-05000327/"}
