It was built by one of the village's earliest and most influential settlers and remains Meridian's oldest, most prominent landmark and the finest reminder of its pre-Civil War heyday.","narrative":"Built in 1835 in the village of Meridian, Cayuga County, this large Greek Revival house was the home of merchant William Smith Ingham. It is a two-story, three-bay, temple-front frame dwelling with a massive pedimented portico on four fluted Ionic columns, flanked by symmetrical one-and-one-half-story side ells. Heavy timber framing, clapboard siding, a stone foundation and a standing seam metal roof make up its fabric, and the interior retains its room layout, pocket doors, plaster ceiling medallions and a winding staircase. A ca. 1900 carriage house stands behind it. Ingham ran stores and served as the village's first postmaster, and he helped shape what was then called Cato Four Corners. He was also an abolitionist who helped a fugitive slave escape to Canada. After he went bankrupt in the Panic of 1857, the property passed to attorney J. Sprague Morley. The house is valued as an intact, finely crafted example of its style and the village's best reminder of its early prosperity.","period_of_significance":"1835 - ca. 1900","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Recently restored according to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation; in use as a single-family dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.924036-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000263.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000263/160df5f185-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000263/160df5f185-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Smith_Ingham_House_16_20_39_047000.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Smith_Ingham_House_16_20_39_047000.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316713","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Smith_Ingham_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8018567"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cayuga-county/ingham-william-smith-house-05000263/"}
