The 3.6-acre property also has a 1952 parish hall and a stone-and-brick carriage block.","why_significant":"The church is argued to be a distinctive and intact example of Gothic Revival church architecture in Dutchess County. It was designed by Richard Upjohn and follows the modest English Gothic parish church model, with a small scale, bell cote, buttresses and steep roof. Scholars cited in the form regard it as one of the finest American interpretations of the rural English Gothic parish church.","narrative":"St. Thomas' Episcopal Church is a small red brick parish church in the rural hamlet of Amenia Union, New York, near the Connecticut border. Built between 1849 and 1851 to a design by architect Richard Upjohn, it follows the Early English Gothic Revival mode, with buttressed side walls, lancet windows, a steep gabled roof and a projecting bell cote. Rev. Homer Wheaton organized the congregation and invited Upjohn to design the building. Local residents supplied bricks, stone, sand and timber, and Trinity Church in New York City provided a mortgage. Inside, a deep chancel, plastered walls and exposed chestnut trusses reflect High Church principles of the period. Later additions include a chancel window installed in 1875, two windows attributed to Tiffany Studios and an organ dating to 1886. A 1952 parish hall and a stone carriage block share the site. The church is considered significant as an intact rural example of Upjohn's parish church designs.","period_of_significance":"1849-1952","architect_builder":"Upjohn, Richard","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Gothic Revival (Early English style)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; the form describes the church as highly intact on the exterior and interior.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.237427-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000261.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000261/2b4c0c445f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000261/2b4c0c445f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Thomas_Episcopal_Church,_Amenia_Union,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St_Thomas_Episcopal_Church,_Amenia_Union,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100009322","name":"Webutuck Agricultural Valley Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/webutuck-agricultural-valley-historic-district-100009322/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317481","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Thomas_Episcopal_Church_(Amenia_Union,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7591947"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/st-thomas-episcopal-church-05000261/"}
