It is significant for transportation, community planning, social history, engineering, architecture and art. The Dual System lines opened undeveloped Bronx land to residential growth and shaped the borough as a commuter area.","narrative":"Pelham Parkway Station is an elevated subway station in the Bronx where White Plains Road crosses Pelham Parkway. Completed in 1917 for Contract 3 of the Dual System IRT, it has three tracks and side platforms carried on a steel frame encased in cast-in-place concrete. Much of the concrete is bush-hammered and set with diamond and square patterns in colored ceramic tile. Mezzanines at each end hold tile walls and mosaic friezes. Squire J. Vickers, the Dual System's chief architect, designed it so that structures at parkways and boulevards would be clad in ornamental concrete. The station is considered the best example of that type. It also reflects how the Dual Contracts extended transit into the outer boroughs and helped turn the Bronx into a commuter borough. At the time of documentation in 2004, the platforms, canopy and windows were being rehabilitated, and the platforms had been lengthened to 527 feet after earlier expansions.","period_of_significance":"1917","architect_builder":"Vickers, Squire J.
