It was also the home of attorney and judge George W. Ward, who prosecuted the 1906 Chester Gillette murder trial, and later of the Breckwoldt family. Long family ownership preserved its integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1893 at 90 Van Buren Street in Dolgeville, this asymmetrical, 2 1/2-story Queen Anne house rises from a cut stone foundation and is clad in clapboard with a band of fish-scale shingles. A wraparound verandah ends in a porte cochere, and the roof carries many dormer forms. Inside, an oak staircase rises from a central atrium, and original stained glass, hardware and early light fixtures remain. A carriage house converted to a garage sits behind. The house was commissioned by Carl Aman, a financial officer of the Brambach Piano Factory. Local German and Italian immigrant craftsmen, whose skills spread through Alfred Dolge's industrial community, produced its woodwork and glass. Attorney George Ward, later Herkimer County district attorney, bought it in 1903. He won national attention prosecuting the Chester Gillette murder trial in 1906. His second wife came from the Breckwoldt family, and descendants kept the house, preserving its exceptional integrity.","period_of_significance":"1893","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the attic story was remodeled into an apartment in the 1990s and the kitchen in the late 1990s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.714594-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000164.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000164/bd06521f20-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000164/bd06521f20-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Agreen54","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Breckwoldt-Ward_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Agreen54</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Breckwoldt-Ward_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318114","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breckwoldt-Ward_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4960067"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/herkimer-county/breckwoldt-ward-house-05000164/"}
