Construction began in fall 1915 and the building was usable by spring 1916.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is a good example of a modest rural Adirondack church with Gothic-inspired features, retaining its original form, fabric and windows. It also reflects the community life of Mountain View and the growth of Adirondack recreation and tourism that followed the railroad's arrival.","narrative":"Built in 1915-16 by a handful of residents of the Adirondack hamlet of Mountain View, in the town of Bellmont, this small white clapboard church follows the typical gable-front meeting house form. Funds came from savings, a $600 loan and chicken-pie suppers, and neighbors donated labor. Gothic-inspired details include pointed-arch windows with stained glass and an offset corner tower with an open belfry holding the original bell. Inside, the dark-stained wainscot, original folding chairs, carpet runners and a pump organ survive, and the building remains nearly as built. The church matters for two reasons. It is a well-preserved example of rural Adirondack church architecture, and it shows how the hamlet grew as a resort community after the railroad arrived in 1892 and faded when passenger service ended in 1957. It has hosted worship, Sunday school, weddings and local meetings, and continues to serve the seasonal community during the summer.","period_of_significance":"1915-1954","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals (vernacular gable-front meeting house form with Gothic elements)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used for services and community events; currently open only in July and August. Ownership was transferred to a Malone Methodist church in 1982, with its own local board.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.78144-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000162.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000162/cc21229303-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000162/cc21229303-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"OneEagle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fall_view_of_First_Union_Protestant_Church,_Mountain_View,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">OneEagle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fall_view_of_First_Union_Protestant_Church,_Mountain_View,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317826","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Union_Protestant_Church_of_Mountain_View","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453938"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/franklin-county/first-union-protestant-church-of-mountain-view-05000162/"}
