Four frame barns also stand on the property.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding, remarkably intact example of late Federal/early Greek Revival domestic architecture in Springport. The house, four barns and 80-acre farm together reflect the agricultural history of the rural town. It was built for William Richardson, whose family was prominent in the area's gypsum (plaster) mining.","narrative":"Built around 1840, this two-story, three-bay brick farmhouse sits on a prominent knoll along Cross Road in Springport, northeast of Union Springs. It has a side ell, a rear wing, fieldstone foundations and gable roofs with exaggerated cornice returns. Details include traceried oval windows in the gables and a front entrance with fluted Ionic columns, faux quoins and half sidelights. Inside, wide baseboards, molded door and window surrounds with corner blocks, Greek Revival mantelpieces and an Adamesque staircase survive. Four frame barns from the late 19th and early 20th centuries stand nearby, and the 80-acre parcel remains a working farm. William Richardson, who married Hannah Yawger, settled here around 1840. The Richardson and Yawger families had earlier made their fortunes mining gypsum for fertilizer. The property was listed for its architecture, as a well-preserved example of late Federal and early Greek Revival style in Cayuga County, and for its link to local agricultural history.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1840 - ca. 1920s","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival (late Federal/early Greek Revival)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single-family dwelling on a working farm; described as remarkably intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.391015-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000160.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000160/0ba723b073-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000160/0ba723b073-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Richardson_House_11_33_41_837000.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Richardson_House_11_33_41_837000.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316725","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Richardson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8017558"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cayuga-county/richardson-william-house-05000160/"}
