It reflects the early twentieth-century change of the area north of Madison Square from affluent residential blocks to a commercial and hotel district. It is also a representative Beaux-Arts example of a moderately priced residential and transient hotel.","narrative":"Occupying a corner of Madison Avenue and East 29th Street in Manhattan, this Beaux-Arts hotel was built in two stages between 1901 and 1907. The original twelve-story steel-frame section has a limestone base, red brick upper floors, white terra-cotta trim, and curved copper bays. An eleven-story addition runs through the block to East 28th Street in a simplified version of the same design. Investor Maitland E. Graves commissioned the building in 1901, and the architects are recorded as Harry Allen Jacobs and Charles T. Mott. The hotel catered to tourists and to buyers visiting New York's garment and dry goods trades. It was one of several hotels that rose north of Madison Square as the area shifted from fashionable housing to business use. The exterior remains largely intact. Inside, only fragments survive of the former lobby, dining room, and Tudor Room, including mosaic floors and decorative plaster ceilings, many now covered for preservation.","period_of_significance":"1901-1907","architect_builder":"Jacobs, Harry Allen; Mott, Charles T.","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals/Beaux Arts","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The exterior retains a very high degree of integrity. Few of the ornate first-floor and basement public room features survive, and many have been preserved and covered over. A new entrance and lobby addition was under construction in 2004 and is excluded from the boundaries. The hotel is listed as still in hotel use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.423663-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000088.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000088/5a8009489b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000088/5a8009489b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Americasroof at English Wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seville-hotel-ny.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Americasroof at English Wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seville-hotel-ny.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319897","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_Seville_NoMad","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q9076588"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/seville-hotel-05000088/"}
