Kelley.","why_significant":"The house is an intact example of a late 19th century middle-class vernacular residence with Italianate trim, and is listed under Criterion C for its well-preserved style. It is also listed under Criterion A for its link to the development of South Chatham and to the locally important Eldridge family, who owned much of the village's real estate.","narrative":"Built in 1877 at 2610 Main Street in South Chatham, this wood-frame house faces south on a lot of just under one acre. The 2½-story main block has a brick foundation, cedar clapboards, paired brackets under the eaves and corner pilasters, all in the Italianate manner. A side porch with turned posts and a pierced railing reflects the Queen Anne style and was probably enlarged within ten years of construction. Inside, painted grained doors and richly profiled moldings survive on the ground floor. It was built for Mercelia Eldridge Kelley and her husband Cyrus, a sail maker who later ran the family lumber and coal business with his father-in-law, Levi Eldridge. The Eldridge family owned much of the village real estate and shaped its growth in the 19th century. The house stayed in the family for 123 years. It is valued as a well-preserved example of Italianate vernacular design and for its ties to the growth of South Chatham.","period_of_significance":"1877-1954","architect_builder":"Unknown (Thomas Ambler, architect, for the 2001 alterations)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate, Queen Anne (porch)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling; renovated in 2001-2002 with new plumbing and wiring, a remodeled kitchen and an added dormer, while the main block remains largely intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.720607-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/15/7940/63794015/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/05000080.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000080/08e7df7018-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000080/08e7df7018-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Thomas Kelley","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mercelia_Evelyn_Eldridge_Kelley_House,_Chatham,_Massachusetts.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas Kelley</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mercelia_Evelyn_Eldridge_Kelley_House,_Chatham,_Massachusetts.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100008033","name":"South Chatham Village Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/south-chatham-village-historic-district-100008033/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794015","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercelia_Evelyn_Eldridge_Kelley_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6818228"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/kelley-mercelia-evelyn-eldridge-house-05000080/"}
