Holt on land from his large holdings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is significant in architecture as an excellent example of the Queen Anne style and house type. It cites the irregular plan, wrap-around porch and eclectic ornament, including feathered brackets, sunbursts and a projecting second-story jetty, that refer to earlier architectural traditions.","narrative":"Built around 1886 on Vineville Avenue northwest of downtown Macon, this two-story wood-frame house was the home of Walter R. Holt, a farmer and wholesale grocer who at one point owned 2,000 acres. The house has an asymmetrical plan, multiple gables, a wrap-around porch, weatherboard and beaded board siding, and original two-over-two windows. Its ornament draws on several traditions, including English medieval woodwork, Japanese-inspired feathered brackets and sunbursts, and Folk Victorian turned balusters and jigsawn brackets. Inside, a paneled staircase with a carved newel post, plaster walls and most original mantels survive. Holt's widow lived there until 1927, and later owners divided it into apartments. It was rehabilitated as an office building in 2002-2003. The house was listed for its architecture, as an excellent local example of the Queen Anne style and house type. Only about half an acre remains of the original 200-acre estate.","period_of_significance":"c. 1886","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated as an office building and certified by the National Park Service in October 2003; current function is business.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.952455-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/05000076.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000076/953d51b3a5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000076/953d51b3a5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Timkemp","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walter_R._Holt_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Timkemp</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Walter_R._Holt_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207029","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134086066"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/bibb-county/holt-walter-r-house-05000076/"}
