It reflects the growth of a farming area and the history of public education in the Town of Niagara. It retains a high level of architectural integrity and shows contemporary school design ideas and later improvements such as a coal and toilet addition.","narrative":"A one-room schoolhouse at the corner of Lockport and Tuscarora Roads, east of Niagara Falls, New York, preserves a piece of rural education history. Built around 1878 to replace a smaller school of about 1842, it was erected by mason Jacob Wagner and carpenter Jacob Reese after the school commissioners approved a $900 tax levy. The clapboard building has a front-facing gable, a central entrance, nine-over-nine windows and a stone foundation. Inside, a vestibule with separate doors for boys and girls leads to a classroom with beaded-board walls, a coal stove and period desks. A rear addition of about 1931 held a coal bin and chemical toilets, and the original outhouse survives. The school served grades one through eight, averaging about twenty pupils a year, until the district consolidated in 1954. It also served as a community meeting place. After use as a book storage facility, it was bought by the Town of Niagara Historical Society in 1980 and now operates as a museum.","period_of_significance":"1878-1954","architect_builder":"Jacob Wagner, mason; Jacob Reese, carpenter","architectural_style":"Late-nineteenth century/vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a museum, owned by the Town of Niagara Historical Society since 1980; the roof was replaced in 2001.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.62186-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05000021.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000021/09c9f09784-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05000021/09c9f09784-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Town_of_Niagara_District_School_No_2_Jun_09.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Town_of_Niagara_District_School_No_2_Jun_09.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320149","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Town_of_Niagara_District_School_No._2","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7830071"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/niagara-county/town-of-niagara-district-school-no-2-05000021/"}
