Its mortise-and-tenon framing, Flemish bond chimneys and simple Georgian interior details illustrate regional construction. It is described as one of only a few surviving eighteenth-century dwellings in the county.","narrative":"Set among farm fields in rural Northampton County, this one-story-with-attic frame house was built around 1775 as a two-room hall-parlor dwelling with a steep gable roof and two massive brick end chimneys laid in Flemish bond. Around 1840 a formerly detached kitchen was attached to one end, a porch bay was enclosed as a bedroom, and the house was reoriented so the north side became the front. The porch was fully enclosed in 1928. Inside, heart pine floors, flush board wainscot, arched fireboxes, hand-planed beaded beams and six-panel doors with H-L hinges reflect simple vernacular Georgian work. The property passed from Daniel Mason to William H. Hardee in 1813, then to Thomas Capel in 1862, and has stayed with descendants of the Hardee and Capel families. After decades of vacancy, a restoration began in 2003. The house is valued as a rare surviving eighteenth-century hall-parlor dwelling in the county.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1775; ca. 1840","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Vacant for about half a century and deteriorated; a restoration began in 2003, including new porches, windows, weatherboards, roof and a bedroom wing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:52.666818-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/7215/47721578/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/04001587.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001587/3b0a3f5db7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001587/3b0a3f5db7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Frank Womble","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mason-Hardee-Capel_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank Womble</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mason-Hardee-Capel_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721578","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mason%E2%80%93Hardee%E2%80%93Capel_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19986976"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/northampton-county/mason-hardee-capel-house-04001587/"}
