The surviving mill buildings retain heavy-timber slow-burn construction and Italianate-influenced brick detailing. Borden Manufacturing bought the earlier mill at auction in 1904 and combined the two plants.","narrative":"Two brick textile mills face each other across North William Street in Goldsboro, a few blocks north of downtown. The Goldsboro Cotton Mills building, begun in 1892, is a two-story, gable-front structure with segmental-arched window openings, corbelled brickwork and small wooden eave brackets. Across the street stands the 1900 Borden Manufacturing Company building. Borden bought the earlier mill at auction in 1904 after its owner, Wayne Cotton Mills, went into receivership, and the two plants then operated together. The complex covers nearly twelve acres and includes an eighty-foot brick smokestack, a boiler room, a water tower and a pedestrian bridge linking the mills. Inside the 1892 mill, open floors, exposed brick walls, chamfered timber posts and thick plank floors reflect slow-burn construction used to resist fire. Windows have been bricked in and later one-story additions extend the north ends, but the original openings remain visible. The property is recognized for its place in the state's textile industry between 1892 and 1954.","period_of_significance":"1892-1954","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Italianate-influenced; heavy-timber industrial construction","criteria":[],"status_note":"Current functions listed as industrial storage and waterworks; many windows bricked in and substantial late twentieth-century additions on the north ends.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.659095-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/33/7228/47722833/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/04001583.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001583/7867adb0f8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001583/7867adb0f8-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Borden_Manufacturing,_Goldsboro.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Borden_Manufacturing,_Goldsboro.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722833","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borden_Manufacturing_Company","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20709112"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wayne-county/borden-manufacturing-company-04001583/"}
