It dates to about 1850 and is a traditional Chesapeake store.","why_significant":"The building is argued to be eligible under Criterion C as a well-preserved example of the vernacular Chesapeake store. It retains construction features such as pegged roof rafters, double beaded ceiling joists with merchandise-hanging nails, a mercantile hatch between floors, numbered post-and-beam members, and double-sheathed doors with original hinges. Its changing uses reflect the commercial needs of the local community over time.","narrative":"This two-story frame store in the center of Eastville, Virginia, was built around 1850 and follows the traditional Chesapeake store pattern. It measures roughly 18 by 50 feet and originally held a sales room, a heated rear counting room, and storage and living space upstairs. Over time it served as a storage building, tavern, hardware store, dry cleaner, residence, dance hall and, most recently, a drug store. Around the start of the twentieth century it was moved to the adjoining southern lot, and by 1910 storefront windows and a large southern addition had been added. Later additions were demolished or removed, but only the original south first-floor wall was lost. Surviving details include pegged rafters, double beaded ceiling joists with cut nails for hanging goods, numbered beams, shuttered windows and double-sheathed doors. These features show how a vernacular commercial building adapted to community needs, and they supported its listing for architecture and commerce. The building is currently vacant and stabilized.","period_of_significance":"1850-1954","architect_builder":"James Lyons","architectural_style":"Other - Mid 19th C. The original structure is temporarily secured with roll roofing, particleboard over the missing ground-floor south wall, and braces between foundation beams.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.583815-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/32/6822/41682232/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/04001540.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001540/515b7f374a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001540/515b7f374a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"James Shelton32","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eastville_Mercantile.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">James Shelton32</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eastville_Mercantile.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682232","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastville_Mercantile","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14691917"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/northampton-county/eastville-mercantile-04001540/"}
