Robert Kelso Dabney, Jr. built it between 1858 and 1859 to a design by architect Alexander Jackson Davis.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Elmington is one of only five executed domestic commissions in Virginia by New York architect A. J. Davis. Only the east wing of Davis's larger design was built, but it survives as a nearly intact Davis design. Extensive letters between Dabney and Davis document how the design developed. It qualifies under Criterion C for its high artistic values.","narrative":"Elmington is a brick country house on Maidens Road, about five miles from Powhatan Courthouse in Powhatan County, Virginia. Robert Kelso Dabney, Jr. built it in 1858 and 1859 after asking New York architect Alexander Jackson Davis to adapt an Italian Villa plate from A. J. Downing's pattern book. Davis produced thirteen drawings and exchanged letters with Dabney over several months. Dabney could afford only the east wing, intending to add a west wing, tower and semicircular veranda later. The Civil War intervened, he went bankrupt, and the house was sold in 1871, so the full design was never completed. The two-story, three-bay house has a full basement, a bracketed gable roof and a Tuscan portico. Interior rooms keep their original arrangement, with modest changes made in the twentieth century. The house is recognized as a nearly intact work by Davis, one of only five of his executed domestic commissions in Virginia, and for the documentary record of its design.","period_of_significance":"1858-1871","architect_builder":"Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892)","architectural_style":"Italian Villa","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling, with a caretaker's cottage, garden shed and in-ground pool on the property.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.073231-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/38/6826/41682638/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/04001538.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001538/006571f7a0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001538/006571f7a0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Mojo Hand","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elmington_VA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mojo Hand</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elmington_VA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682638","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmington_(Powhatan,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15216489"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/powhatan-county/elmington-04001538/"}
