It was built c. 1860 in New York City as a chapel of the Amity Baptist Church, then moved to Ulster County in 1905 and enlarged in 1914.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is significant under Criterion C at the local level as a representative example of nineteenth-century religious design that was relocated and enlarged for contemporary use in the early twentieth century. It remains a relatively intact, modest example of Picturesque Gothic Revival design, with early twentieth-century additions. A Greek Revival lectern, likely from the congregation's earlier Amity Street church, adds interest.","narrative":"Chapel Hill Bible Church, formerly Amity Baptist Church, is a small wood-frame church on a rise of land southwest of Marlboro in Ulster County, surrounded by apple orchards and open fields. It began as a chapel in the Amity Baptist Church complex on 54th Street in New York City, probably built around 1860 with board-and-batten siding, Gothic detailing and a small bell tower. In 1905 the chapel was dismantled, carried by railroad and rebuilt near Bingham Road under the direction of Reverend Leighton Williams, whose father had been the congregation's first pastor. In 1914 transepts were added, along with heating and electric lighting, and the exterior was probably re-covered in cedar shingles. The building is listed for its architecture: a modest, fairly intact example of mid-nineteenth-century Gothic Revival design that was moved and enlarged for new use. Inside, a Greek Revival lectern, a memorial plaque and the original 1902 boiler survive.","period_of_significance":"c. 1904-1914","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use as the Chapel Hill Bible Church; the form describes it as relatively intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.618217-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04001450.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001450/f6c6c73eac-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001450/f6c6c73eac-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chapel_Hill_Bible_Church,_Marlboro,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chapel_Hill_Bible_Church,_Marlboro,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322558","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapel_Hill_Bible_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1062670"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/chapel-hill-bible-church-04001450/"}
