It blends late Greek Revival and Picturesque features and was modestly updated around 1920. It retains very high integrity in a rural setting and is one of few remnants of Carley's Mills' nineteenth century development.","narrative":"Carley's Mills Schoolhouse is a small one-room school on County Route 84 in the Town of Hastings, Oswego County, built around 1870 by the Carley Mills Freewill Baptist Church as a combined school and meeting house. It is a one-story, gable-fronted frame building on a rubble stone foundation, with clapboard siding, six-over-six windows and a hipped-roof belfry that still holds what appears to be its original bell. A vestibule and bathroom wing were added around 1920. Inside, the classroom keeps its plaster walls, beadboard ceiling, pine floors, blackboards and nineteenth century attached seat-desks. The layout, with a separate cloakroom, tall windows and a high ceiling, follows ideas from Henry Barnard's School Architecture. Its details mix late Greek Revival and Picturesque features. The school closed in 1953 when the town joined the Central Square School District. Its high integrity and rural setting made it notable as a surviving piece of Carley's Mills' nineteenth century history.","period_of_significance":"c. 1870- c. 1920","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Other: vernacular (transitional late Greek Revival and Picturesque features)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant in the current function entry; maintained by the Carley Mills Cemetery Association.
