It also reflects the village's prosperity as a commercial and transportation center in the Genesee Valley. The original pews and 1890s stained glass show changing taste in Calvinist-tradition church design.","narrative":"Union Presbyterian Church, formerly the First Presbyterian Church of Wheatland, sits on a level, partly treed lot at the northern edge of Scottsville's business district, about 20 miles south of Rochester. The congregation began as a mission church in 1822, and its first meeting house burned in 1856. Luke Marvin won the $6,000 contract for the replacement, which was dedicated in May 1857. The wood-frame building has clapboard siding, broad pilasters, a low-pitched gable roof, round-arched windows, an oculus and a square tower. Inside are the original low pews with scroll arms, a balcony, a tin ceiling and non-figural stained glass windows installed in the mid-1890s by Haskins and Collyer of Rochester. Rear wings were added in 1911 and 1953-54. The church is significant as a largely intact example of vernacular Romanesque Revival design that reflects Scottsville's nineteenth-century prosperity.","period_of_significance":"1856-1954","architect_builder":"Luke Marvin","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Early Romanesque Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; the form lists current function as religious.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.295067-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04001439.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001439/b48357708d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001439/b48357708d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"rogerhogle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Union_Presbyterian_Church_2012-09-20_17-53-14.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">rogerhogle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Union_Presbyterian_Church_2012-09-20_17-53-14.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318961","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Presbyterian_Church_(Scottsville,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7885967"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/union-presbyterian-church-04001439/"}
