It is a largely unchanged commission of one of Rochester's foremost architectural firms. It also reflects the early twentieth-century growth of the Beechwood area and the continued popularity of Gothic modes in church building.","narrative":"Saint Mark's and Saint John's Episcopal Church is a stucco-clad neighborhood church on Culver Road in the Beechwood section of northeast Rochester. Built in 1927-28 to designs by the local firm Gordon and Kaelber, it has a cruciform main block, steeply pitched flared roofs, a gabled vestibule and attached office and classroom wings. Inside, oak trusswork in the nave conceals the steel frame that carries the roof, and oak paneling marks the chancel. The church came from the 1921 merger of Saint Mark's, a mission begun in 1878, and Saint John's Mission, begun in 1915. Parishioners had moved toward the city's northeastern edge, and the new building served a growing suburban area. Its design blends medieval English parish church massing with Arts and Crafts ideas of simple, honestly worked materials, while also providing classrooms, a kitchen and an auditorium. It is regarded as an important, largely unchanged example of the firm's work.","period_of_significance":"1927-1954","architect_builder":"Gordon and Kaelber","architectural_style":"Late Gothic Revival; Arts and Crafts","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as religious facility, the same as its historic function; the original design intent remains readable despite a one-story wing added to the west and south.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.225473-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04001438.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001438/0ee4a4d1c0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001438/0ee4a4d1c0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanielPenfield","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SaintMarksAndSaintJohnsEpiscopalChurchRochesterNewYork.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">DanielPenfield</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SaintMarksAndSaintJohnsEpiscopalChurchRochesterNewYork.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318930","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Mark%27s_and_Saint_John%27s_Episcopal_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7401776"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/saint-marks-and-saint-johns-episcopal-church-04001438/"}
