The campus also includes the relocated Glendale School, a gymnasium, a cafeteria building and other later structures.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the school is significant under Criterion A for its role in the consolidation of rural schools in Cumberland County in the 1920s, when six one-room schools were merged into it. It is also significant under Criterion C as an example of restrained Collegiate Gothic design by Fayetteville architect Stiles S. Dixon, with largely intact interior finishes.","narrative":"Built in 1924 on the western edge of Fayetteville, the two-story brick school was designed by local architect Stiles S. Dixon in a restrained Collegiate Gothic style. Its modified H-shaped plan has a nine-bay main block, one-bay projecting wings, and crenellated parapets. Limestone surrounds the central entrance, and the brick is laid in running bond. The school consolidated six one-room county schools in 1924, including Glendale, Raymount, Kornbow, McPherson, Westover and Galatia, and it reflects the state's early twentieth-century push to replace small rural schools with larger buildings equipped with auditoriums. The auditorium was enlarged in 1937 with WPA funds. Much of the interior survives, including tongue-and-groove wood floors, plaster walls, transoms, and an original decorative metal auditorium ceiling. The 1938 and 1949 wings are clearly later additions. Glendale School, an 1897 building moved to the site in 1951 and remodeled, is part of the campus.","period_of_significance":"1925-1954","architect_builder":"Stiles S. Dixon (architect); William H.
