Dixon, AIA. The campus also includes a 1938 classroom building, a 1947 gymnasium, and other outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the school is significant under Criterion A for its association with educational history in Fayetteville and Cumberland County during the consolidated school movement of the 1920s. It also argues under Criterion C that the building is a representative example of Classical Revival school architecture by a local architect, retaining a high degree of integrity in its plan, interior finishes and setting.","narrative":"Built in 1925 on a prominent site near the junction of Trade Street and Southern Avenue in Massey Hill, this two-story red brick school has a raised basement and a pedimented four-bay entrance portico with paneled pilasters and the name Massey Hill School inscribed on its entablature. Stiles S. Dixon, a Fayetteville architect, designed it for the Cumberland County Board of Education, and Carolina Construction Company of Hamlet built it for a contract of $78,807. The community had been a mill village around three mills established in the late 1890s and early 1900s, and the school replaced earlier buildings that had burned or been overcrowded. Its plan included an auditorium, a basement cafeteria and sixteen classrooms, and much of the original interior, including heart pine floors, plaster walls and transoms, remains. The school is regarded as a model of the consolidated school movement in Cumberland County. A 1938 classroom building by William Henry Deitrick and a 1947 gymnasium by the same architect add to the campus.","period_of_significance":"1925-1954","architect_builder":"Dixon, Stiles S., AIA (architect); Dietrick, William H., AIA (architect); Lasilets, Basil (architect); Carolina Construction Co., Hamlet, NC (builder)","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Continues in use as Massey Hill Classical High School, serving grades nine through twelve.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.620672-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/44/7198/47719844/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/04001387.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001387/490efe85cd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001387/490efe85cd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Schooliscool135","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MHCHS_Massey_Hill_High.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Schooliscool135</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MHCHS_Massey_Hill_High.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719844","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massey_Hill_Classical_High_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6784612"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/cumberland-county/massey-hill-high-school-04001387/"}
