It is also the only surviving canal-era commercial building from Cuylerville's boom as a port on the Genesee Valley Canal. It was the site of several later local events, including the 1916 founding of an Italian-American political association.","narrative":"Built in 1841 beside the Big Tree Road and the newly opened Genesee Valley Canal, this two-story frame building in Cuylerville began as the National Exchange, a tavern and inn. Its transitional Federal and Greek Revival design includes clapboard siding, a broad cornice with gable returns, a curved interior staircase and a second-floor ballroom. The canal and a holding basin lay less than fifty yards away, and the inn served both highway and canal travelers. After the canal closed, the hamlet declined, but the building adapted. It became a gathering place and boarding house for Italian immigrant salt mine workers after 1906, and the Italian-American Citizen Political Awakening Association formed there in 1916. Local tradition holds it operated as a speakeasy during Prohibition. It housed engineers working on the Mount Morris dam from 1948 to 1951, then reopened in the early 1950s as a restaurant for tourists. It is the only surviving canal-era commercial building in Cuylerville and a rare example of a large 1840s hostelry.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1841-1954","architect_builder":"Charles Phinney (builder)","architectural_style":"Federal; Greek Revival (transitional Federal/Greek Revival)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in operation as a restaurant; the form notes the hotel continues in operation today, with some interior alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.422238-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04001344.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001344/076288e1b4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001344/076288e1b4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NATIONAL_HOTEL,_CUYLERVILLE,_LIVINGSTON_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318678","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hotel_(Cuylerville,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6973413"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/national-hotel-04001344/"}
