A late-19th-century carriage barn and a retaining wall are also on the property.","why_significant":"The house is significant in architecture as a distinctive and highly intact example of Greek Revival domestic architecture in Columbia County. It shows the style's hallmarks: symmetrical form, cubic massing, a broad frieze with eyebrow windows, multiple-light sash and an Ionic-columned entrance porch. It also sits on a promontory overlooking the Hudson River valley and reflects the country seats built by wealthy Hudson residents.","narrative":"Set on a rise just south of Hudson, this two-and-one-half-story Greek Revival house was built around 1840 and looks out toward the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains. It has a square plan, clapboard walls, a low hip roof, a five-bay front, and a porch with four Ionic columns beneath a deep entablature. A Victorian cupola was added around 1870. Inside are double front parlors, black marble mantelpieces, grain-painted doors and a mahogany-detailed staircase. The builder is unknown, and the house may have been built for Aaron Innis or John Van Deusen. Van Deusen's daughter Evalina and her husband Henry A. DuBois later lived there, and it was shown as a country estate in an 1878 county history. The property also holds a 19th-century carriage barn and a limestone retaining wall. It was listed for its architecture, as a notably intact local example of Greek Revival design from c. 1840 to c. 1870.","period_of_significance":"c. 1840 - c. 1870","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling; the form says the house retains a high level of integrity inside and out.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.693342-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/04001340.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001340/19e1e62409-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001340/19e1e62409-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_A._and_Evanlina_Dubois_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_A._and_Evanlina_Dubois_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316992","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_A._and_Evanlina_Dubois_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5717050"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/columbia-county/dubois-henry-a-and-evanlina-house-04001340/"}
