It takes in commercial, governmental, residential, industrial and community landmark resources from the late 18th to the mid-20th century, plus several earlier listed districts and properties.","why_significant":"The downtown was laid out in 1783 on the 'Washington plan,' a gridiron around a courthouse square that served as the prototype for many Georgia courthouse towns. The district keeps a large number of Federal and Greek Revival houses, since no battles were fought nearby and the city was not on Sherman's march. It also preserves Victorian and early 20th-century commercial, industrial and residential buildings.","narrative":"Washington, the seat of Wilkes County in eastern Georgia, was founded in 1780 as the first town named for George Washington. This district covers most of the historic city, about 862 acres, and includes several districts and individual properties listed earlier. The downtown plan of 1783 is a gridiron of streets focused on a courthouse square, and it became the model for many courthouse towns in Georgia. Around the square are one- to three-story brick commercial buildings from the 1870s onward, including the 1898 Fitzpatrick Hotel. Surrounding neighborhoods hold houses from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century, with many Federal and Greek Revival examples that were enlarged or updated over time. Landmarks include the 1904 courthouse, the 1888 Mary Willis Library and the 1891 jail. A railroad-related industrial area southwest of downtown has cotton warehouses, mills and a bottling plant. Resthaven Cemetery holds both white and African-American burials. The district also keeps surviving African-American resources west of downtown.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal, Greek Revival, Queen Anne, Romanesque, Colonial Revival, Classical Revival, Tudor Revival, Bungalow/Craftsman, Commercial Vernacular Victorian, 20th Century Commercial and other vernacular types","criteria":[],"status_note":"Many resources remain in use as homes, businesses, city hall, courthouse, churches and library; the Southern Cotton Oil Company building was recently razed.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.838751-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/04001319.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001319/2651451ba4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001319/2651451ba4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"TampAGS, for AGS Media","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mary_Willis_Library,_Washington,_Georgia.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">TampAGS, for AGS Media</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mary_Willis_Library,_Washington,_Georgia.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"86000412","name":"Washington Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/washington-commercial-historic-district-86000412/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209983","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q141819547"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/wilkes-county/washington-historic-district-04001319/"}
