Chandler, with three outbuildings and a concrete pond.","why_significant":"The house is significant for its association with John W. Chandler, who became the largest produce broker on Virginia's Eastern Shore, a major landholder and the platter of Exmore and Oyster. It is also significant as a rare example of the Queen Anne style in Exmore that retains architectural integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1890 near the Exmore railroad station, this large Queen Anne house in Northampton County, Virginia, was the home of produce broker John W. Chandler. The weatherboard frame dwelling has a slate-covered hipped and cross-gabled roof, an octagonal-roofed corner tower, and projecting canted and curved bays. Inside, it retains pine floors, plaster walls, pocket doors with brass hardware, paneled stair newels and fireplaces with glazed tile, carved wood and leaded glass. The wrap-around porch has been removed because of damage. Three outbuildings and a concrete pond stand on the grounds. Chandler, an Eastern Shore native, became the area's largest produce broker in the early twentieth century. He bought most of the land in Exmore and Oyster, platted both villages, and owned over two thousand acres, along with fertilizer, canning and insurance businesses. The house is recognized for his role in the region and for its rare, well-preserved architecture, during a period running from 1889 to 1954.","period_of_significance":"1889-1954","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as work in progress; the wrap-around front porch has been removed because of damage.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.08045-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/6822/41682228/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/04001270.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001270/770638278d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001270/770638278d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"James Shelton32","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_W_Chandler_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">James Shelton32</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_W_Chandler_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682228","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_W._Chandler_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14692066"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/northampton-county/chandler-john-w-house-04001270/"}
