It is grouped with a small telescope building and the Alden House, the director's residence completed in 1883.","why_significant":"It fulfilled Thomas Jefferson's wish to include astronomy at the University of Virginia and housed one of the best telescopes in North America when installed. Its Warner and Swasey dome was the first of its design and was patented. The Romanesque Revival building retains much original equipment, and its refractor contributed to roughly a third of the stars identified before satellite astronomy.","narrative":"Perched on Observatory Hill west of the University of Virginia, this round brick observatory was completed in 1884 and houses a 26½-inch refracting telescope donated by Leander McCormick of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company. The lenses were cast in France and ground by Alvan Clark & Sons. Philadelphia's Wilson Brothers designed and built the Romanesque Revival structure, and Warner and Swasey of Cleveland made the patented dome, which turns easily on a circular track. Much original hardware survives, including the dome gears, the observing ladder and chair, and the library cabinets. Additions were made between 1930 and 1945 and in 1972. Nearby stands the brick Queen Anne-Eastlake Alden House, built as the director's home. The observatory realized Thomas Jefferson's wish for astronomy at the university and became a leading research site. Its telescope helped identify about a third of the roughly 10,000 stars catalogued before satellite astronomy arrived.","period_of_significance":"1884--1953","architect_builder":"Wilson Brothers","architectural_style":"Late Gothic Revival; Queen Anne-Eastlake","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The original form says the observatory is still used for training students and public viewing nights. A later amendment lists the current function as vacant/not in use.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.934333-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/1/6794/41679401/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/04001245.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001245/d001b1da43-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001245/d001b1da43-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"Rob","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leander_McCormick_Observatory.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rob</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leander_McCormick_Observatory.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679401","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCormick_Observatory","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q947962"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/albemarle-county/mccormick-leander-observatory-04001245/"}
