It also includes a c.1940 grape arbor, a c.1950 storage shed, and cultivated agricultural fields.","why_significant":"The farm is presented as a good example of an African-American subsistence farmstead of the early to mid-20th century, tied directly to farmer Sam Ripley. Its house is also a good example of a vernacular hall-parlor dwelling that grew through later historic additions. It is significant locally in agriculture, architecture and black ethnic heritage.","narrative":"Sam Ripley Farm is a 2.5-acre homestead in the rural lowlands of eastern Liberty County, Georgia, near Midway. Sam Ripley, a subsistence farmer born in 1900, built the frame hall-parlor house in 1926 using salvaged lumber from demolition sites and sawmills. Rooms were later added to the rear. The house keeps its novelty-board siding, brick piers, six-over-six windows, and a shed-roof porch with peeled-log posts. A c.1940 grape arbor, a c.1950 shed, mature trees, and fields complete the farmstead. Ripley grew peas, corn, vegetables, and rice to feed his family and to trade, and he worked at the nearby Whitland Saw Mill. The property is recognized locally as a surviving example of the farms African-American families developed in the Midway and Dorchester area. It is also valued as a vernacular house that grew over time. The house now operates as a bed and breakfast, and the fields are still cultivated.","period_of_significance":"1926-1954","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"OTHER: hall-parlor","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The house was rehabilitated in 1995 and is currently used as a bed and breakfast; the fields are still cultivated with sugar cane and Seminole peas.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.154565-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/04001187.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001187/5ebe83709e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001187/5ebe83709e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ripley_Farm,_Liberty_County,_GA,_USA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ripley_Farm,_Liberty_County,_GA,_USA.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208801","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Ripley_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q85847144"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/liberty-county/ripley-sam-farm-04001187/"}
