The builder was the Flagler Company.","why_significant":"The building is significant in commerce for its link to A&P, an early nationwide grocery chain, and for serving as the regional headquarters for Southeastern stores during a period of company expansion. It is significant in architecture as an excellent, well-preserved example of a concrete-frame industrial building with brick infill and steel windows. It is described as among Atlanta's best surviving examples of concrete-frame construction.","narrative":"Built in 1930 on Memorial Drive east of downtown Atlanta, this three-story concrete-frame building combined a food warehouse, a bakery and offices for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company. Its exposed concrete frame, brick infill panels, steel industrial windows and interior mushroom columns reflect a common warehouse type of the 1920s and 1930s, valued for quick construction, fireproofing and open floor plans. The site sat on a railroad belt line, so goods arrived by rail and left by truck. The building served as the company's regional headquarters for Georgia and Alabama, later covering parts of Tennessee and South Carolina, until 1963, and the bakery operated until about 1976. It was listed for its role in the chain's growth and as one of Atlanta's best surviving concrete-frame buildings. Between 1997 and 2002 it was converted to loft apartments with retail space, preserving stairs, fire doors, windows and columns.","period_of_significance":"1930-1954","architect_builder":"Flagler Company (builder)","architectural_style":"Other: early 20th-century industrial building","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated between 1997 and 2002 as residential loft apartments with retail space in the basement; current functions listed as multiple dwelling and professional commercial use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.647229-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/04001183.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001183/1713412fae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001183/1713412fae-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Brogers784","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:881_Memorial_Drive_-_Atlanta.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Brogers784</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:881_Memorial_Drive_-_Atlanta.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"76000623","name":"Cabbagetown District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/cabbagetown-district-76000623/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208210","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134314763"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/fulton-county/great-atlantic-and-pacific-tea-company-04001183/"}
