It dates from about 1926 and is attributed to sculptor Dionicio Rodriguez.","why_significant":"The gate is nominated under Criterion C in the area of Art as a work attributed to Dionicio Rodriguez. It carries his trademark heavily textured bark with knots and insect holes, and a source cited in the form says he sculpted it. It is the only park site in Texas besides Brackenridge Park with a surviving sculpture attributed to him.","narrative":"Two curving concrete \"tree trunks\" form the entrance gate to Buckeye Park in San Antonio. They cross at the top, where one trunk is notched and the other passes through it. Smaller curving \"logs\" brace the sculpture. The surface is heavily textured with imitation bark, knots and insect borings, a technique known as faux bois. The gate is about 8 feet 5 inches tall and 17 and a half feet wide. Though unsigned, it bears the trademarks of sculptor Dionicio Rodriguez, and a source cited in the form says he made it around 1926. A partial inscription names Hugo Traupmann, Director of Parks. Unlike a similar gate at a former cement company office, it stands alone without an adjoining fence. Besides Brackenridge Park, Buckeye Park is the only park in Texas with a surviving work attributed to Rodriguez. Remnants of color remain on the underside, and earlier repairs were poorly done. It was listed for its artistic value.","period_of_significance":"c.1926","architect_builder":"Dionicio Rodriguez (attributed)","architectural_style":"Other: Faux bois sculpture","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The gate retains some remnants of color on its underside and shows evidence of inept repairs; the form says it could use careful restoration. Current function is still a gate and work of art.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.263047-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/18/9683/40968318/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/04001169.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001169/a12c2bb780-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001169/a12c2bb780-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Buckey_Park_Gate.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Buckey_Park_Gate.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968318","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckeye_Park_Gate","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001587"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/bexar-county/buckeye-park-gate-04001169/"}
