DeLongchamps.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the courthouse is significant under Criterion A for its association with the establishment and maintenance of local politics and government in the least populated county in California. It also stands as an architectural landmark built from locally quarried stone by a well-known regional architect, and it has served continuously as the county's central seat of government.","narrative":"Alpine County Courthouse is a one-story government building in Markleeville, California, completed in 1928 to a design by Nevada-based architect Frederick J. DeLongchamps. Its walls are rusticated blocks of light cream-colored rhyolite tuff quarried at the abandoned Silver Mountain City site, with quoins, deeply recessed round-arched entries and corbel tables in a Romanesque Revival manner. Inside are mosaic tile floors, oak balustrades and transoms, and a basement that held three steel jail cells until about 1978. County voters approved an $18,000 bond in 1927 to build it, even though the county had only a few hundred residents. It replaced a wood-frame courthouse used since 1875 and gave the isolated mountain communities a central place to conduct legal and civic business. Listed for its role in local government, the building remains in use and has changed little since construction, apart from a new roof, electricity, and heating and cooling systems.","period_of_significance":"1928","architect_builder":"DeLongchamps, Frederick J.","architectural_style":"20th Century Revivals (Romanesque Revival)","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"In continuous use as a county courthouse since 1928; described as in excellent condition with very little alteration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:29.704014-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/04001074.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001074/1a9a1d79b6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/04001074/1a9a1d79b6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"Ken Lund","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Markleeville_Trip_(20).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ken Lund</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Markleeville_Trip_(20).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858381","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpine_County_Courthouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4735482"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/alpine-county/alpine-county-courthouse-04001074/"}
